Welcome

From the General Chapters in 2000, Brother Patrick, the chairman of the Hong Kong APLEC, brought back with him a new mission from the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools ¡V ¡§ the question of the rights of the child would be a central plank for work and reflection and to be a matter of educational urgency in the 21st century¡¨.

Brother Patrick announced the new mission during the Third Plenary Meeting of the Hong Kong APLEC dated 23rd September in the year 2000. The mission is formally stated in the Proposition 14 of the General Chapters 2000.

In its Second Plenary Meeting 2001 dated 26th May, 2001, the Hong Kong APLEC invited two member schools, namely the Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College and the Chan Sui Ki Primary School to conduct a project on the ¡§rights of child¡¨ in Hong Kong.

The work means a lot of data-collection, data analysis, data interpretation and also a lot of arguments and conclusions. However, everyone is happy to learn so much from the contents of the project as well as from the process of the work. It is hoped that the project could be an on-going project and members could have amendments on it continuously. It is also hoped that besides the betterments of the project, the world could at the same time has improvements in the rights of the child.

Proposition 14

In order that the rights of the child be considered as a major focus of concern for the Lasallian mission of education during the next seven years, each District, Sub-District and Delegation should include this question in its plan of action. It will appoint at least one Brother or Partner who will help it:

¡P to cooperate with local organizations which work for the promotion of the rights of the child;

¡P to detect local violations of the rights of children;

¡P to alert local authorities when children¡¦s rights are violated;

¡P to ensure that its schools and universities teach and observe the rights of the child;

¡P to maintain contact with the secretariat for the educational mission.
